PROSTATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is a cutting-edge procedure performed to help improve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate without the risk of sexual side effects. Prostatic artery embolization is performed by inserting a catheter into an artery in the leg. The physician then advances the catheter towards the prostate. Once the catheter is positioned in the artery supplying blood to the prostate, tiny particles are injected that reduce  bloodflow to the artery, which helps to ultimately reduce the size of the prostate.

Who is a candidate?

  • Men over the age of 50

  • Men who have an enlarged prostate (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia-BPH)

  • Men with slow flow of urine or slowed ejaculation

  • Men who get up at least 3 times during nighttime to use the bathroom
     

Results of Prostate Embolization

  • Outpatient procedure done under twilight sedation

  • Prostate Embolization provides satisfactory improvement to 80% of patients

  • No Sexual-side effects

  • Up to 4-6 years of prostate relief

  • Side effects include blood in urine and/or temporary bruising at procedure site
